Pumpkins, Pirates and Pancakes

We got an early start to Halloween by carving pumpkins. Actually nephew G. carved the pumpkins with some design help from B., J., J. and A. The above photo was taken without a flash and below with a flash. nephew G. got some pumpkins after helping a friend with some delayed maintenance at their house. He also brought home peppers and other vegetables from their garden.

The pumpkins with their designers. We knew we would be carving again because the end of September is way too early for Halloween Pumpkins.

The girls have been doing a Group activity for kids at the local university and next door to the building is a wonderful ship playground. We picnic-ed inside and played, until it got too cold. Here we have J., B. and their friends M. and S.

For history we've been learning about the changes that went on in France between the French Revolution and the Third Republic. It goes like this: Republic One (result of the French Revolution), Empire (Napoleon), Kingdom (Citizen King), Republic Two, Empire Two (Napoleon's nephew Luis-Napoleon), and the Third Republic - which continues to the present. To make the changes more relevant, the Story of the World (Vol 4) people came up with a simple card game. Each round is played four times and the players discard one card and pick up another from the pile. There are six rounds representing each of the eras. During a Republic round all the cards have value but the royal cards and the ace are worth one point, the number cards have the value of their number. During the Empire round the only card that has positive value is the Ace - it represents the Emperor, Royal cards have negative values and the number cards are not worth anything. During the Kingdom round the royal cards have value, the Ace is negative and the other number cards don't count. After each round the value of the cards is counted up and written down on a chart. After all six rounds the grand totals are figured out (mathematics along with history!). Above is B. calculating with the scorecard.

In honor of our foray into French history we made french pancakes - crepes.

After cooking all thirty something crepes we put stuff in them and ate them for lunch.

There were all kinds of fancy recipes for things to put in them. I figured our leftovers would make pretty good crepe fillings. We tried a thick potato soup with cheese in one crepe, black bean-sweet potato chili with cheese in another. For desert, a sprinkling of powdered sugar, then roll it up. Delicious!
